Excess
lit. denotes “want of strength” (a negative, kratos, “strength”), hence, “want of self-control, incontinence,” Mat 23:25, “excess;” 1Co 7:5, “incontinency.” Cp. akrates, “powerless, incontinent,” 2Ti 3:3, RV, “without self-control.”
lit., “a pouring out, overflowing” (akin to anacheo, “to pour out”), is used metaphorically in 1Pe 4:4, “excess,” said of the riotous conduct described in 1Pe 4:3.
Notes: (1) Asotia denotes “prodigality, profligacy, riot” (from a, negative, and sozo, “to save”); it is translated “riot” in Eph 5:18, RV, for AV, “excess;” in Tit 1:6; 1Pe 4:4, “riot” in AV and RV.
