Eye Salve

Eye Salve

Eye-salve

primarily a diminutive of kollura, and denoting “a coarse bread roll” (as in the Sept. of 1Ki 14:3), hence an “eye-salve,” shaped like a roll, Rev 3:18, of the true knowledge of one’s condition and of the claims of Christ. The word is doubtless an allusion to the Phrygian powder used by oculists in the famous medical school at Laodicea (Ramsay, Cities and Bishoprics of Phrygia, Vol. I, p. 52).
