Fagaras e Alba Iulia, Romania, archdiocese of

Founded on 18 May 1721 as the archdiocese of Fagaras. Name changed to Fagaras e Alba Iulia on 16 November 1854. The Romanian Catholic Church suffered brutal persecution during the Communist era as the government sought to eliminate all evidence of an Eastern Church in communion with Rome. Priests and lay people were imprisoned, tortured, and executed, and parish property was confiscated. Elevated to a major archbishopric on 16 December 2005.
