is used (a) of “illicit sexual intercourse,” in Joh 8:41; Act 15:20, Act 15:29; Act 21:25; 1Co 5:1; 1Co 6:13, 1Co 6:18; 2Co 12:21; Gal 5:19; Eph 5:3; Col 3:5; 1Th 4:3; Rev 2:21; Rev 9:21; in the plural in 1Co 7:2; in Mat 5:32; Mat 19:9 it stands for, or includes, adultery; it is distinguished from it in Mat 15:19; Mar 7:21; (b) metaphorically, of “the association of pagan idolatry with doctrines of, and professed adherence to, the Christian faith,” Rev 14:8; Rev 17:2, Rev 17:4; Rev 18:3; Rev 19:2; some suggest this as the sense in Rev 2:21.

denotes “a man who indulges in fornication, a fornicator,” 1Co 5:9-11; 1Co 6:9; Eph 5:5, RV; 1Ti 1:10, RV; Heb 12:16; Heb 13:4, RV; Rev 21:8; Rev 22:15, RV (AV, “whoremonger”).
