Gabrias
Gabrias
( v.r. , i.e., , hero of Jehovah), according to the present text of the Sept. the brother of Gabael, to whom Tobit intrusted () ten talents of silver (Tob 1:14), though in another place (Tob 4:20, ; compare Fritzsche, Exeg. Handb. ad loc.) he is described as his father. The readings throughout are very uncertain, and in the versions the names are strangely confused. It is an obvious correction to suppose that should be read in 1:14, as is in fact suggested by Cod. F.A., … . . The misunderstanding of (comp. Tob 1:10; Tob 1:16, etc.) naturally occasioned the omission of the article. The old Latin has Gabelo fratri meo filio Gabahel; and so also 4:20.
