Gregory XII, Pope
Reigned from 30 November 1406 to 4 July 1415 . Born c.1327 in Venice, Italy as Angelo Corrario or Angelo Correr; died on 18 October 1417 at Recanati, Italy . He was elected after swearing to resign, in order to end the Great Schism, if Benedict XIII, the Avignon pope , would do likewise. When the latter hesitated, Gregory refused to resign, and the cardinals at the Council of Pisa elected Alexander V to replace both. Gregory, who was the legal pope , pronounced both schismatics. At the 14th session of the Council of Constance which had been called by anti-pope Baldassare Cossa, Gregory submitted his resignation by proxy. It was accepted on 4 July 1415 , and he was made cardinal -bishop of Porto.
