Swiss anatomist and physiologist. Born 16 October 1708 at Berne, Switzerland; died 7 December 1777. Famed for his anatomical and physiological researches, particularly on the irritability of the muscles. Directed the organization of the theater of anatomy and school of obstetrics of the University of Gottingen. Wrote numerous anatomical and botanical works.

Haller, Albrecht von
one of the greatest of modern physiologists, was born in Berne Oct. 16, 1708, and displayed, even in childhood, the most extraordinary talents. He studied medicine first at Tbingen, and afterwards at Leyden, under Boerhaave. After extensive travels he became professor of anatomy, surgery, and botany at Gttingen in 1736, and remained there until 1753, when he returned to Berne. There he resided, honored by his fellow- citizens, for nearly a quarter of a century; continued to benefit science by his literary labors; filled several important offices in the state, and adorned the Gospel by his life. He died in October 1777. A great part of the modern science of physiology is due to the labors and genius of Haller. But his place in our pages is due to his steady religious life, to his constant recognition, in his works, of the great truths of Christianity, and especially to his religious writings, viz. Brief ber die wichtigsten Wahrheiten der Ogffnbaroug (Berne, 1772); Briefe zur Vertheidigung der Ofenbartrtg (Berne, 1775-77, 3 parts), consisting of letters to his daughter on the truth and excellence of Christianity.
