Haven

(, choph, Gen 44:13, a sea-side or coast, as elsewhere rendered; . machoz’, a refuge, hence a harbor, Psa 107:30; , Act 27:12). The Phoenician part of the coast of Palestine had several fine harbors, SEE PHOENICIA, and some such were also in possession of the Hebrews: such were Caesarea and Joppa (q.v. severally), which were especially made use of for coastwise communication (1Ma 14:5; 1Ma 14:34; Josephus, Ant. 15, 9, 6). The port ( ) of Tyre (q.v.) was the most famous on the whole Mediterranean shore (Eze 27:3). A harbor is called in Chaldee, also in Samaritan. SEE NAVIGATION. The Cretan harbor called Fair Havens (q.v.), , is incidentally mentioned in the N.T. (Act 27:8). SEE CRETE.

hav’n ((1) , hoph (Gen 49:13, the Revised Version margin beach; Jdg 5:17, the Revised Version margin shore, the King James Version seashore, the King James Version margin port); elsewhere sea-shore (Deu 1:7; Jos 9:1; Jer 47:7) or sea coast (Eze 25:16); from root , haphaph, to wash or to lave; compare Arabic haffa, to rub; and haffat, border; Hufuf, in Eastern Arabia; (2) , mahoz (Psa 107:30); (3) , limen (Act 27:12 bis); also Fair Havens, , kalo limenes (Act 27:8)): While the Greek limen is harbor, the Hebrew hoph is primarily shore. There is no harbor worthy of the name on the shore of Palestine South of Haifa. Indeed there is no good natural harbor on the whole coast of Syria and Palestine. The promontories of Carmel, Beirt and Tripolis afford shelter from the prevalent southwest wind, but offer no refuge from the fury of a northern gale. On rocky shores there are inlets which will protect sail boats at most times, but the ships of the ancients were beached in rough weather, and small craft are so treated at the present time. See illustration under BITHYNIA, p. 483.
