HEALTH.The word formerly covered (a) healing, (b) spiritual soundness, (c) general well-being. For (a) cf. Pro 12:18; Pro 13:17, Jer 8:15, where it represents the word usually translated healing. (b) In Psa 42:11; Psa 43:5; Psa 67:2, and frequently in Pr. Bk. [Note: r. Bk. Prayer Book.] Version, it stands for the word otherwise tr. [Note: translate or translation.] salvation or help. In these usages it is active. (c) The wider passive use, including general well-being of body and soul, not merely the absence of disease, is illustrated by Act 27:34, 3Jn 1:2. Cf. helth (, shalom, , yeshuah, , riph’uth, , ‘arukhah; , sotera, , hugiano): Shalom is part of the formal salutation still common in Palestine. In this sense it is used in Gen 43:28; 2Sa 20:9; the stem word means peace, and is used in many varieties of expression relating to security, success and good bodily health. Yeshuah, which specifically means deliverance or help, occurs in the refrain of Psa 42:11; Psa 43:5, as well as in Psa 67:2; in the American Standard Revised Version it is rendered help. Riph’uth is literally, healing, and is found only in Pro 3:8. Marpe’ also means healing of the body, but is used in a figurative sense as of promoting soundness of mind and moral character in Pro 4:22; Pro 12:18; Pro 13:17; Pro 16:24, as also in Jer 8:15, where the Revised Version (British and American) renders it healing. ‘Arukhah is also used in the same figurative sense in Isa 58:8; Jer 8:22; Jer 30:17; Jer 33:6; literally means repairing or restoring; it is the word used of the repair of the wall of Jerusalem by Nehemiah (chapter 4).
The word health occurs twice in the New Testament: in Paul’s appeal to his shipmates to take food (Act 27:34), he says it is for their soteria, literally, safety; so the American Standard Revised Version, the King James Version health. The verb hugianino is used in 3Jo 1:2, in the apostle’s salutation to Gaius.

Psa 42:11 (a) This word is used to express the joy of the heart and the peace of the soul which are so easily reflected in the face. It tells of the splendid condition of the heart and life of that one who becomes a victorious and praising Christian. (See Psa 43:5).
Psa 67:2 (a) This type is used to indicate the fact that the prosperity which GOD gives because of godly living gives strength and blessing to those who are walking with the Lord. The society and the business life of these will be in happy, strong, excellent condition.
Pro 12:18 (a) By this figure we understand that those who speak wisely and well to others bring blessing to the hearers so that they rejoice in life and are prosperous in their souls. (See also Pro 13:17).
Isa 58:8 (a) This is a description of the healthy, holy and godly person who fulfills the description found in verse Isa 58:7 and so reveals the fact to others that he is growing in grace and in the knowledge of GOD and in usefulness.
Jer 8:22 (a) By this figure we understand that although GOD had remedies for Israel’s needs, these remedies were not used and so the nation was weak, sickly and depressed.
