In matrimony, is a condition or circumstance which, under natural, Divine, or Church law, renders a marriage unlawful or invalid. The two classes, hindering and diriment, are treated under those heads.

im-pedi-ment: Found in Mar 7:32, had an impediment in his speech, as a translation of , moglalos, comparative of , mogos, toil and , lalos, speech, i.e. one who speaks with difficulty. In the Septuagint the word is used as a translation of , ‘illem, dumb (Isa 35:6).

denotes “speaking with difficulty” (mogis, “hardly,” laleo, “to talk”), “stammering,” Mar 7:32; some mss. have moggilalos, “thick-voiced” (from moggos, “with a hoarse, hollow voice”). In the Sept., Isa 35:6 “(the tongue) of stammerers.”
