The influential diocese of Constantinople was founded sometime prior to 405. It was suppressed after the fall of Constantinople to the Muslim Turks in 1453. The Vicariate Apostolic of Constantinople was re-established on 15 April 1742. The name was changed to the Vicariate Apostolic of Istanbul on 30 November 1990. Notable bishops include
