The heap of witness; so rendered in the margins of our Bibles. (See Gen 31:47-55.) Jacob called it Galeed and Mizpah; as if he had said, let the Galeed be witness, and this Mizpah be witness, There is something very tender and interesting in this parting of natural ties never to meet again. Such will be the everlasting separation in every instance of nature, where our affinities are not new-formed in grace.

[Jega’r-sahadu’tha]
Aramaic name given by Laban to the heap of stones raised as a witness between him and Jacob, which Jacob called GALEED, both signifying ‘cairn of witness.’ Gen 31:47.

Jegarsahadutha
Je’gar-sahadu’tha. (heap of testimony). The Aramaean name given by Laban, the Syrian, to the heap of stones, which he erected as a memorial of the compact, between Jacob and himself. Gen 31:47. Galeed, a “witness heap”, which is given as the Hebrew equivalent, does not exactly represent Jegar-sahadutha.
