(only in the plural , shelobbim’, from , to mortice together; Sent. , Vulg.juncturie), prop.joints, e. . at the corners of a base or pedestal; hence perhaps an ornament overlaying these angles to hide the juncture (1Ki 7:28-29). In 1Ki 7:35-36, the term thus rendered is different, namely , yacd, lit. a hand, i.e. a lateral projection, probably referring to side-borders to the same pedestals. The description is too brief and the terms too vague to allow a more definite idea of these appendages to the bases in question. SEE LAVER.

lej (, shalabh): The word in the sense of side-projection is used in 1Ki 7:28, 1Ki 7:29 in connection with the bases of Solomon’s MOLTEN SEA (which see); in 1Ki 7:35, 1Ki 7:36, where the King James Version uses the same word, the Revised Version (British and American) has stay (yadh, literally, hand). The Revised Version (British and American) likewise has ledge (round) for the King James Version compass (karkobh) in the description of the altar in Exo 27:5; Exo 38:4 (see ALTAR), and the American Standard Revised Version substitutes ledge for settle (azarah) in Eze 43:14, Eze 43:17, Eze 43:20; Eze 45:19.
