Ludger Duvernay
Journalist, born Vercheres, Quebec, Canada , 1799 ; died Montreal, Canada , 1852 . He founded the Society of Saint John the Baptist for the purpose of preserving the religion, institutions, and language of the French Canadians . The maple-leaf, which he chose as emblem of Canada , has since been universally accepted there. He published the periodicals “Le Patriote Canadien” and “Minerve.”
