Considered a hindering impediment by some canonists. If one party has publicly rejected the Catholic faith without joining a heretical sect, or has become a member of a society condemned by the Church , or has been guilty of public crime, or has incurred censure and shows no repentance, the approval of the bishop must be obtained in order to assist at the marriage.
