Mendel, Gregor Johann

Biologist, born Heinzendorf, Austrian Silesia, 1822; died Brnn, Moravia, 1884. Ordained a priest of the Augustinian Order, 1847, he was appointed teacher of physics in the Realschule. In 1886 he relinquished his educational labors to become abbot of Saint Thomas’s monastery , Brnn. His experiments, which resulted in Mendel’s Law, were commenced while he was a novice and carried out in the gardens adjoining his abbey .
