Missionaries of Our Lady of Africa of Algeria
Missionaries of Our Lady of Africa of Algeria
A society of secular priests and coadjutor brothers living in community. The first archbishop of Algeria , later Cardinal Lavigerie, founded it in 1868 for the immediate care and instruction of Arab children orphaned by the famine of 1867 and the general purpose of converting all Africa; constitutions approved, 1908, and again, 1921. Not, strictly speaking, a religious order, its members lead the community life and are governed by a superior-general residing at Maison-Carree, near Algiers. The society maintains missions in the Sahara, the Sudan, Vicariates Apostolic of Northern and Southern Nyanza, Uganda, Tanganyika, Nyassa, and Upper Congo, a Greek Melchite seminary at Jerusalem, and a scholasticate at Carthage. The society’s name was changed to the Missionaries of Africa (M. Afr.) in 1984. Contacts:
