has the meanings (a) “to put to flight, drive away,” (b) “to pursue,” whence the meaning “to persecute,” Mat 5:10-12, Mat 5:44; Mat 10:23; Mat 23:34; Luk 11:49 (No. 2 in some mss.); Luk 21:12; Joh 5:16; Joh 15:20 (twice); Act 7:52; Act 9:4-5, and similar passages; Rom 12:14; 1Co 4:12; 1Co 15:9; 2Co 4:9, AV (RV, “pursued”); Gal 1:13, Gal 1:23; Gal 4:29; Gal 5:11, RV, “am … persecuted” (AV, “suffer persecution”); so Gal 6:12; Phi 3:6; 2Ti 3:12, “shall suffer persecution;” Rev 12:13.
