Phurim
Phurim
(= of Lots)
A Jewish feast instituted to commemorate the deliverance of the Jews from the evil doings of Aman, Xerxes’s minister, who had obtained from King Assuerus an edict for their massacre, the date being appointed by lot. Through the intercession of Esther the slaughter was prevented (Esther 8). The feast is celebrated on 15 Adar with great solemnity.
