Ramoth
RAMOTH
A famous city in the mountains of Gilead; often called RamothGilead, and sometimes Ramath-Mizpeh, or the Watchtower, Jos 13:26 . It belonged to Gad, was assigned to the Levites, and became one of the cities of refuge beyond Jordan, Deu 4:43 Jos 20:8 21:38. It was famous during the reigns of the later kings of Israel, and was the occasion of several wars between these princes and the kings of Damascus, who had conquered it, and from whom the kings of Israel endeavored to regain it. Here Ahad died, Joram was wounded, and Jehu was anointed king of Israel, 1Ki 22:1-53 2Ki 8:28,29 9:1-14 2Ch 22:5,6 .

(Heb. Ramoth’, [but in Deu 4:43; Jos 20:8; 1Ch 6:73; 1Ch 6:80], heights, plur. of Ramah [q.v.]; Sept. usually ), but in Ezr 10:29, in 2Ch 18:2-3; 2Ch 18:5, etc.), the name of three towns in Palestine, and also of one man.
1. (Sept. .) One of the four Levitical cities of Issachar according to the catalogue in 1Ch 6:73. In the parallel list in Jos 21:28-29, among other variations, JARIMUTH SEE JARIMUTH (q.v.) appears in place of Ramoth. It seems impossible to decide which is the correct reading; or whether, again, REMETH SEE REMETH (q.v.), a town of Issachar, is distinct from them, or one and the same.
2. A city in the tribe of Gad (Deu 4:43; Jos 20:8; Jos 21:38; 1Ch 6:80), elsewhere called RAMOTH-GILEAD SEE RAMOTH-GILEAD (q.v.).
3. (Sept. .) A city in the tribe of Simeon (South Ramoth, 1Sa 30:27). SEE RAMATH-NEGEB.
4. (Heb. text Yirmoth’, , marg. ve-Ramoth’, , and Ramoth; Sept. v. r. .) An Israelitish layman of the sons of Bani, who renounced his strange wife at Ezra’s instigation (Ezr 10:29). B.C. 458.

(1) , ra’moth; , he Rhamoth: A city in the territory of Issachar assigned to the Gershonite Levitea (1Ch 6:73), mentioned between Daberath and Anem. It seems to correspond to Remeth in Jos 19:21, and to Jarmuth in Jos 21:29, and is possibly identical with er-Rameh about 11 miles Southwest of Jenn.

ramoth (, ramoth, Kere for yeremoth (Ezr 10:29 the King James Version); the Revised Version margin Kethbh makes the name similar to those in Ezr 10:26, Ezr 10:27): One of the offenders in the matter of foreign marriages. Ramoth (heights, pl. of Ramah). There were several places of this name, usually with some addition to distinguish them from one another.
Ramoth-Gilead
Ramoth-Gilead, called also Ramoth-Mizpeh, or simply Ramoth, a town in Gilead, within the borders of Gad (Jos 13:26), which belonged to the Levites (Jos 21:38; 1Ch 6:65; 1Ch 6:80). It was one of the cities of refuge (Deu 4:43; Jos 20:8), and one of the towns in which an intendant was stationed by Solomon (1Ki 4:13). It was the last of their conquests which the Syrians held; and Ahab was killed (1Ki 22:1-37; 2 Chronicles 18), and fourteen years after his son Joram was wounded (2Ki 8:28), in the attempt to recover it. The strength of the place is attested by the length of time the Syrians were enabled to hold it, and by Ahab and Joram having both been solicitous to obtain the aid of the kings of Judah when about to attack it; these being two of the only three expeditions in which the kings of Judah and Israel ever co-operated. It was here also that Jehu was proclaimed and anointed king (2Ki 9:1-6); but it is not very clear whether the army was then still before the town, or in actual possession of it. Eusebius places Ramoth-Gilead on the River Jabbok fifteen Roman miles west of Philadelphia (Rabbah), where the ruins of a town are still to be seen. Buckingham is, however, more disposed to seek the site of Ramoth-Gilead in a place now called Ramtha, or Rameza, which is about twenty-three miles N.W.N. from Philadelphia, and about four miles north of the Jabbok, where he noticed some ruins which he could not examine.

A city in Gilead, within the limits of the tribe of Gad, Jos 21:38; called also Ramah and Ramoth-Gilead. 2Ki 8:28-29; 1Ki 4:13; 1Ki 22:1-37; 2Ch 18:1-34; 2Ch 22:5-6. It was one of the cities of refuge. Deu 4:43; Jos 20:8; 1Ch 6:80. During the reigns of the later kings of Israel, Ramoth was the occasion of several wars between them and the kings of Syria. 1Ki 22:3; 2Ki 8:28. It may be identical with es-Salt, but more probably with Gerash.

It was assigned for a dwelling of the Levites, and was one of the cities of refuge beyond Jordan, Jos 20:8; Jos 21:38. It became famous during the reigns of the latter kings of Israel, and was the occasion of several wars between them and the kings of Damascus, who had made a conquest of it, which the sovereigns of Israel endeavoured to regain, 1Ki 22:3-5. Eusebius says, that Ramoth was fifteen miles from Philadelphia toward the east. St. Jerom places it in the neighbourhood of Jabbok, and consequently to the north of Philadelphia.
