Saint Asaph, Wales, diocese of
Founded about the middle of the 6th century by Saint Kentigern, with Asaph as his successor bishop in 573. Nothing further is known from that time until the incumbency of bishop Gilbert in 1143. The numerous diocesan shrines were destroyed during the Protestant Reformation. The last Catholic bishop, both of the diocese and of the ancient hierarchy, was Thomas Goldwell in 1555.
