(Skr.) One of the five “subtile elements” in the philosophy of the Sankhya (q.v.) and other systems, corresponding to the matter apprehended in the sensation of sound, touch, color, taste, and smell; generally, the manifold of sensory experience, perhaps also the “reals”, or sensation-generals, equivalent to bhutamatra (q.v.). — K.F.L.
