Tappuah
[some Tappu’ah] (Heb. Tappu’ach, [in 1Ch 2:43, , an apple, as often; Sept. , , , , etc., and twice [Jos 15:34; Jos 17:8] omits; Vulg. Taphucu), the name of a man and also of two places in Palestine. SEE APPLE.
1. Second named of the four sons of Hebron of the lineage of Caleb (1 Chronicles 2, 43); not to be confounded with either of the following (see Keil, ad loc.). B.C. ante 1618.
2. A town in the lowland district of Judah, mentioned between Engannim and Enam (Jos 15:34), in the group situated in the N.W. corner (see Keil, ad loc.); differs from the Beth tappuah (q.v.) of Jos 15:53, but probably the same with the royal city of the Canaanites (Jos 12:17), conquered by the Israelites (see Keil, ad loc.). It is perhaps the present Beita tab, an important place on a conspicuous hill, about half-way from Jerusalem to Beit-Jebrin. It contains about 600 or 700 inhabitants, is built of stone, and has a ruined tower or castle (Robinson, Bibl. Res. 2, 13). This is apparently the place meant by Schwarz (Palest. p. 102) by the village Beth-Tapa, five English miles N.W. [ten N.E.] of Beit-Jibrin.
3. A town in the tribe of Ephraim, near the border of Manasseh, in which latter the adjacent territory (land of Tappuah) lay (Jos 16:8; Jos 17:8); probably containing a fine spring, and hence called (Jos 17:7) EN-TAPPUAR SEE EN-TAPPUAR (q.v.). It is no doubt, as suggested by Van de Velde (Memoir,’ p. 351), although this is disputed by Keil (Comment. ad loc.), the same as the present Atuf, a deserted village about four hours N.E. by E. of Nablis, with traces of antiquity and ancient wells of excellent water. Schwarz also states that at the present day the Arabs call the country between Nablds and the Jordan Balad-tapuach, as probably the town of this name was formerly in it (Palest. p. 89). SEE TRIBE.

Tappuah (2)
The present Tuffah, which probably represents Beth-tappuah (Jos 15:53), is briefly described in the Memoirs to the Ordnance Survey (3:310). Beit-Ata, which we have conjectured to be the Tappuah of Jos 12:11; Jos 15:34, is copiously described, ibid. page 22 sq., 83; but Tristram suggests (Bible Places, page 48) for the latter Biblical site the present ArtuJ; which lies three and a half miles to the north-west of Beit- Atah, and one and a quarter miles south-east of Surah (Zorah). It is described in the above Memoirs (3:22) as “a small village on a low hill, with an open valley to the nwest. There is a pool in the valley, where the village obtains its water.Olive-trees occur around the place. “There do not seem to be any traces of antiquity. The third Tappuah, or that of-Ephraim (Jos 16:8; Jos 17:8), or Ein-tappuah, is conceded bv Tristram (ut sup. page 195) to be the modern Atuf, but to this Conder objects (Memoirs, 2:357) that there is no spring and no tombs, and that the names have but one letter in common. The place is “a mud village, built on an older site, and supplied by wells and cisterns” (ibid. page 227).

Tappuah
apple-region. (1.) A town in the valley or lowland of Judah; formerly a royal city of the Canaanites (Josh. 12:17; 15:34). It is now called Tuffuh, about 12 miles west of Jerusalem.
(2.) A town on the border of Ephraim (Josh. 16:8). The “land” of Tappuah fell to Manasseh, but the “city” to Ephraim (17:8).
(3.) En-tappuah, the well of the apple, probably one of the springs near Yassuf (Josh. 17:7).

1. A city of Judah in the shephelah or low hilly region (Jos 15:34); on the lower slopes of the hills, 12 miles W. of Jerusalem.
2. On Ephraim’s border, not far from the Mediterranean, “THE LAND OF Tappuah,” in the territory of Ephraim but belonging to Manasseh (Jos 16:8; Jos 17:8). Having a good spring it is called En Tappuah (Jos 17:7). Near the torrent Kanah.

Tappuah (2)
A son of Hebron (1Ch 2:43); perhaps the meaning is a place near Hebron where one of Hebron’s sons settled, from whence the family took its name. Smith’s Bible Dictionary makes Tappuah colonized by the men of Hebron, the same place as Beth Tappuah. (See BETH TAPPUAH.) But the continuation of the genealogy, and Korah being never mentioned as a place, requires Hebron to be a person.

TAPPUAH.1. A son of Hebron (1Ch 2:43). Probably the name is that of a town in the Shephlah (Jos 15:34. It was probably to the N. of Wdy es-Sunt, but the site has not been recovered. 2. See En-tappuah. 3. One of the towns W. of Jordan whose kings Joshua smote (Jos 12:17). It was perhaps the same place as No. 2 above; but this is by no means certain. See also Tiphsah and Tephon.

tapu-a, ta-pua (, tappuah, apple):
(1) A royal city of the Canaanites, the king of which was slain by Joshua (Jos 12:17). It is named between Beth-el and Hepher, and may possibly be identical with the city named in Jos 16:8; see (3) below. There is nothing to guide us to a decision.
(2) (Omitted by Septuagint.) A city in the Shephelah of Judah (Jos 15:34). It is named between Engannim and Enam in a group of cities that lay in the Northwest of the territory of Judah. Tristram suggested identification with Artuf, about 1 1/2 miles Southeast of Zorah. G.A. Smith places it in Wady el Afranj, possibly identifying it with Tuffuh, fully 4 miles West of Hebron. This position, however, is not in the Shephelah. The place probably represents Beth-tappuah of Jos 15:53. No quite satisfactory identification has yet been suggested.
(3) A place on the border between Ephraim and Manasseh (Jos 16:8). The land of Tappuah, i.e. the land adjoining the town, belonged to Manasseh, but the town itself belonged to Ephraim (Jos 17:8). En-tappuah was probably a neighboring spring. Tappuah was to the South of Michmethath, and the border ran from here westward to the brook Kanah. Some would place it at Khirbet Atuf, about 11 miles Northeast of Nablus. More probably it should be sought to the Southwest of the plain of Makhneh (Michmethath). It may be identical with Tephon, which, along with Timnath, Pharathon, and other cities, Bacchides fortified with high walls and gates and bars (1 Macc 9:50). No identification is possible.

Tappuah, or Beth-Tappuah
1.A city in the tribe of Judah, not far from Hebron (Jos 15:53). Robinson identifies it with an old village, called Teffuh, which he found upon the hills north-west of Hebron.
2.Another Tappuah lay in the plain of Judah, apparently in the vicinity of Zanoah, Jarmuth, Socoh, etc. (Jos 15:34): which of these was the place conquered by Joshua is not very clear (Jos 12:17; comp. 10:6).
3.Another place of the same name occurs on the confines of Ephraim and Manasseh (Jos 16:8).
4.And in 1Ch 2:43, a man of this name appears.

Tappuah (tp’pu-ah or tap-p’ah), apple region. 1. A town in the plain country of Judah. Jos 15:34. 2. A city on the border of Ephraim and Manasseh; the city belonged to Ephraim, the land or district named from it to Manasseh. Jos 16:8; Jos 17:8. This was no doubt identical with En-tappuah. It is not certain which of these two places is intended in Jos 12:17.
