University, Cologne
Founded by Pope Urban VI, 1388 , at the instance of the town council, and inaugurated, 1389 . It was represented at the councils of Constance and Basel . The Renaissance was opposed at Cologne. At the time of the Reformation the university strongly defended the Catholic Faith. It declined after the 16th century . During the French Revolution French troops entered Cologne , 1794 , and in 1796 the university was closed.
