William D’Avenant
Poet laureate, born Oxford, England , 1606 ; died London, England , 1668 . After the fall of Charles I he went to France , later becoming a Catholic. He revived theatrical performance in England , 1656 , and left an unfinished epic and many dramas, exceptionally moral for the period.
