Scottish writer, scientist, physicist, and mineralogist. Born 11 December 1781 at Jedburgh, Scotland; died 10 February 1868. Made renowned investigations and examination of crystals and discovered crystals which had two axes of double refraction. Discovered fluorescence. Invented the kaleidoscope and the lensed spectroscope.
