The Followers of the Faith Are Admonished to Keep in God’s Love

"Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life" (Jdg_1:21).

1. The verse does not tell us to keep loving God. This is an easy task. Where is the saved one, who does not love the Saviour? Where is the kept one, who does not love his Keeper? Where is the one who has been delivered, that does not love his Deliverer? When we consider all that God has done, and is doing, and has in preparation to do for us, surely we cannot but love Him.

2. What we are admonished to do is to keep in the love of God. That is to never do anything that would put us under His chastening hand; to never allow anything to enter our life that would break our fellowship.

In 2Ti_2:1 we read, "Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus". A disobedient son can never lose sonship, but he may lose his fellowship. What we need to do is to live every day and every hour and to so serve every day and every hour, that we will be kept where God can manifest His love toward us.

3. There are certain things which we can do, which will strengthen us in the love of God. For instance we read: "Therefore doth My Father love Me, because I lay down My life" (Joh_10:17). Of course, God always loved Christ, but when He yielded His life upon the Cross, a new love was begotten. Surely then, as we yield our all to Him and please Him in sacrifice, or in service, we are kept in His love.

4. The verse suggests that we should seek to fathom the depth of God’s love toward us. We might read it thus: "Keep yourselves in knowing the love of God". Or, as it is in Ephesians: "That ye * * may be able to comprehend * * what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height" of His love. Many a man knows nothing of the depths of a father’s love, or, of a mother’s love, until he has children of his own. We need to. know God’s love in order that we may be kept in the center of it.
