0178. The Eldest Servant
The Eldest Servant
"And Abraham said unto the eldest servant of his house, that ruled over all that he had, Put, I pray thee, thy hand under my thigh: and I will make thee sware by the Lord, the God of Heaven, and the God of the earth, that * * thou shalt go unto my country and to my kindred, and take a wife unto my son Isaac" (Gen_24:2-4).
The eldest servant, Eliezer, who was steward over all of Abraham’s goods, is a type of the Holy Spirit.
This is the age of the Holy Spirit. He is the third Person of the Trinity. He is here to have charge over all things. He indwells the saint; He fills the yielded life with His hallowed presence. He convicts the sinner, in fact He is wholly in charge of the "goods of the Father;" He rules over all that the Father hath.
There is, however, one chief mission of the Holy Spirit in this age, and that is, the calling out of a Bride for Christ.
The Spirit is calling to one and to all to come. The Kingdom of Heaven is like unto a certain king, which made a marriage for his son, and sent forth his servants to call them that were bidden to the marriage.
The servants work together with the Holy Spirit in this call. We are His mouthpiece. It is "the Holy Ghost and us."
It is passing beautiful to note the tact, the perseverance and the positive assurance of Eliezer as he presses his quest for Isaac’s bride. The Holy Spirit too, presents His claim in the most convincing way. He tells of the glory of our "Isaac" and "Abraham." He magnifies Christ.
Rebekah received kindly the eldest servant of Abraham; let the sinner open his heart to the Holy Spirit, the One sent from God.
Rebekah took down her water pot, and gave Eliezer to drink; she also gave his camels to drink, and then, she took him to her house and presented him to her mother and brother. Let the man of this world rejoice in the fact that the Spirit of God has come to his door. Let Him in, receive Him with joy, and yield Him the homage that His grace and glory demands.
God pity the one who resists the Spirit of grace, and who does despite to His holy name. Let him that hath an ear hear the Spirit plead, let him follow the Spirit’s voice, and gladly go with Him to the marriage of the Lamb.
