0221. David Afraid of God

0221. David Afraid of God

David Afraid of God

"And David was afraid of God that day, saying, How shall I bring the Ark of God home to me?" (1Ch_13:12).

Sin always makes us fear God. Adam and Eve, as soon as they sinned, hid away from God. The wicked will yet cry to the rocks and to the mountains to fall on them and hide them from the face of Him Who sits on the throne.

The very last scene of all, is that of the wicked going away into everlasting punishment.

Afraid of God! The child is afraid when sin is in his life. He cannot look squarely in the face of his father.

Afraid? For very shame! David soon learned the folly of his fear. He soon learned that God delights to shelter and to succor and to support His feeblest saint. How beautifully did David write his heart throbs, in later days:

"I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and fortress:

My God; in Him will I trust.

Surely He shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler,

And from the noisome pestilence.

He shall cover thee with His feathers,

And under His wings shalt thou trust."

But for the time being, David was afraid of God, because He saw the judgments of God. This fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. Afraid of God? Yes, afraid to disobey Him; afraid to sin against Him.

But, never afraid of God when the heart is clean, and the sheltering wing secures. It is unconfessed and wilful sin, and even ignorant but nevertheless ruthless sin, that brings hurried chastisement; but "a broken spirit and a contrite heart, Thou wilt not despise, O God."
