Jonah, a Type of Israel

Jonah’s experiences present to us, in a nutshell, the whole story of Israel. God spake unto us in the old times in the experiences of the Prophets, as well as by the Prophets’ words.

Abraham’s experiences, and Isaac’s experiences and Joseph’s experiences were all types, written for our admonition.

Hosea was to "go, love a woman," according to the love of God for the children of Israel, and Hosea stands throughout his personal experiences with his wife; her wooing, her bearing children; her deserting her husband; her being bought back again and her abiding in the after years faithful, as a type of Israel and of God’s dealings with Israel.

Joshua, the priest, in the days of Zechariah, as he stands clothed with filthy garments seeking cleansing; as he stands resisted of the devil; as satan is rebuked and Joshua’s filthy garments are removed; as a fair miter is placed upon his head–in all of this, Joshua is a true type of Israel.

So we need not be surprised if Jonah’s marvelous experiences teach us, in picture, God’s dealings with His people, Israel. The God Who has written His Gospel in the stars, and made the very Zodiac to shine forth the wonders of His grace, can certainly write His Gospel in the lives of His Prophets. And the wonder of it all is, that the story that God writes, whether it be in the stars or in the lives of His Prophets, or in the building of His tabernacle, or in the establishment of His feasts or in the offering of His sacrifices, is all one and the selfsame story. The harmony of their message is perfect; there is no crossing of lines, no two voices, no mixture of truths; everything proclaims one message; the same message.
