0244. Jonah, a Type of Christ
Jonah, a Type of Christ
We have before us a mission of unsurpassed importance. As the study proceeds we will observe how all-important is the Jonah Sign. The resurrection of Christ rests on the Jonah Sign, and on the resurrection rests every vital issue of our faith.
No wonder then, that the enemy is forever seeking to ridicule the story of Jonah in the belly of the big fish, and to discount the historicity and Divine inspiration of the whole Book.
The denial of the literalness of Jonah’s experience is a serious matter. Whether was easier for God to bring Jonah forth alive from the belly of the fish, or for God to bring Christ forth alive from the bowels of the earth?
When one ruthlessly mocks the veracity of the Jonah Story he is casting out of court the very thing which Christ Jesus established by His own words, and the very thing upon which Christ based His one and supreme proof of His Deity.
When one denies the story of Jonah three days and three nights in the belly of the fish, and of Jonah vomited out upon the land; he will find it an easy matter to deny the literal resurrection of the Lord Himself.
And then what follows? With no story of Jonah left, and with no resurrection of Christ left, there is nothing left. This is the solemn message of this lesson. The Word of God speaks with plain and positive utterance. "If Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins * * ye are of all men the most miserable." Our all is staked upon the resurrection of Christ; and the resurrection of Christ and His all, is staked upon the Jonah Sign.
