0271. Belshazzar in Life: (C) He Mocked God
Belshazzar in Life: (C) He Mocked God
"They drank wine, and praised the gods of gold, and silver, brass, and iron, and wood, and stone" (Dan_5:4).
The pleasure seeker and the debauched will find it easy to mock God. Belshazzar brought the vessels, which had been taken by Nebuchadnezzar from the Temple of God in Jerusalem; they drank their wine in them; they praised their heathen gods, which were no gods at all.
In all of this Belshazzar offered a double affront against God. He not only debased God’s name, by putting to unholy use, the vessels that had been consecrated to an unholy use–vessels taken from the Temple of God; but, he also lauded false gods.
There is no depth of blasphemy too base for those who are fully yielded to the love of the world. God is not in all their thoughts. They never use His holy name, save as they cast mire and dirt upon it. Around many a card table, at many a wine supper, in many a dance hall, there are those who defame the name of the Lord. Consider the insults that have been cast into the face of the Living God. Consider the hard words which have been spoken against Him.
There is scarcely a day that one’s heart is not made to shudder as he hears along the broad highways, words, from human lips, that cast slime upon the God of all grace. He who died for men is defamed of men. They take His name in vain; they continually call upon God to damn this one and that one. Yet, God is always crying: "Look and live."
