0275. Belshazzar in Death: (C) His Death Was in Fear
Belshazzar in Death: (C) His Death Was in Fear
"Then the king’s countenance was changed, and his thoughts troubled him, so that the joints of his loins were loosed, and his knees smote one against another" (Dan_5:6).
The vision of the hand, writing upon the wall, somehow or other terrified the king. It was a most unusual procedure; it was a most inexplicable thing. What did it all mean–the steady movement of that part of the hand that wrote, and the strange hieroglyphics that were written?
Quickly the wise men, and the astrologers, and the soothsayers, were ordered to appear before the king. They could not read the writing. Then Daniel was brought in and he both read and interpreted the superscription.
Lost sinner, there is a handwriting today upon thy wall. Giddy and gay you are feasting away your days; you are living in lust, while ‘mid the scenes of your revelry you are blaspheming and reviling the God of all grace. Soon, and with staggering swiftness, will God send forth the pronouncement of His wrath. You will quail and cringe before the oncomings of His judgments. You will cry unto the rocks and to the mountains saying, "Fall on us and hide us from the face of Him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb: for the great day of His wrath is come, and who shall be able to stand?" (Rev_6:16-17).
We beseech the sinner to seek shelter under the covert of His wings. Hide thyself in Him, O lost one.
"While I draw this fleeting breath,
When my eyelids close in death,
When I soar to worlds unknown,
See Thee on Thy judgment throne,
Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee."
