0329. THE GIFT OF GOD.
THE GIFT OF GOD.
"When thou hast eaten and art full… thou shalt bless the Lord thy God for the good land which He hath given you" (Deu_8:10).
1. What this gift was. "The good land." They could not purchase it, neither could they work for it. It was the gift of His grace, as is the Lord Jesus Christ His Son. "The gift of God is eternal life" (Rom_6:23).
2. To whom it was given. "Which the Lord thy God giveth thee." It was given to those who had been redeemed by the blood of the paschal lamb, and who had by faith gone into it. The good land of promise for us is in Christ Jesus in whom are all the promises of God. Through His redeeming Blood we may by faith enter into possession of these unsearchable riches which are in Him (Pro_10:22).
3. The enjoyment of the gift. "When thou hast eaten and art full." There was sufficiency in the good land to satisfy every soul in it. There is exceeding abundant grace for all who are in Christ Jesus (1Ti_1:14). Eat, O beloved. This is a land without scarceness. They did all eat and were filled when our Lord fed the hungry multitude. If our eyes are on Him He will "satisfy the hungry with good" (Psa_107:9).
4. The blessed result. "Thou shalt bless the Lord." Godless fulness only makes men, in the pride of their hearts, to kick (Deu_32:15). Fulness of grace makes thankful. It is His desire to so satisfy us that we will be constrained to bless the Lord. Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits (Psa_103:1-4).
