0356. THE SINGLE EYE AND FULNESS OF LIGHT.
THE SINGLE EYE AND FULNESS OF LIGHT.
"The light of the body is the eye: therefore when thine eye is single, thy whole body also is full of light" (Luk_11:34).
1.The light is needed. There was no light in creation till God said "Let there be light." "I am the Light of the World." Without Him all are the children of darkness. All who are wise in their own eyes put darkness for light (Isa_5:20-21).
2.The light has come. "He that followeth Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life" (Joh_8:12). "In Him was life, and the life was the light of men" (Joh_1:4). This light shineth in darkness, but the darkness comprehended it not.
3. The eye needs opening. "The natural man cannot receive the things of God, because they are spiritually discerned" (1Co_2:14). "Open Thou mine eyes that I may behold" (Psa_119:18). "Who hath opened thine eyes? A Man called Jesus" (Joh_9:25).
4. The whole body is illuminated through the eye.
It may be a very narrow channel, but it is not the eye, but the light that fills with brightness. The faith may be weak and narrow, but it is not the faith that saves, but the great Christ that it rests on. The root fibres of a plant may be weak and small, but the fulness of the earth gets through sufficient for the life of the plant.
5. The single eye brings fulness of light. The pure healthy eye will always take in as much of the light as the body needs. A simple honest faith will expect from the Lord grace sufficient for every time of need. God who commandeth the light to shine out of darkness will always cause it to shine in the hearts that are single and pure, and they shall have the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
6. The light must come into contact with the eye.
The light is for the eye. Christ is for the heart. It is a pleasant thing for the eye to behold the Sun of righteousness. There are diseased eyes that cannot bear the light of revealed truth. They love the darkness rather than the light, because their deeds are evil. Lift up thine eyes and behold. "Behold the Lamb of God."
7. The evil eye fills with darkness. "When thine eye is evil, thy body also is full of darkness" (Luk_11:34). A faith that does not receive the light is unbelief. The light that is in such is darkness. The heart that seeks only its own selfish ends cannot enter into the light; it is an evil heart, shutting out the light, and filling itself with darkness (Mat_6:23).
