0367. For Whom Was the Law Laid Down?

For Whom Was the Law Laid Down?

"Knowing this, that the Law is not made (laid down) for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, * * and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine" (1Ti_1:9-10).

1. The very fact that God wrote the Law, is proof that men are sinners. People who are sinless need no law. If we love the Lord our God with all our heart, with all our soul, with all our mind, and with all our strength, and our neighbor as ourselves, why should we then be admonished so to love them? Laws of conduct are given to regulate conduct, and they are given where conduct needs to be regulated.

2. If all men were honest, and obedient, and holy, and clean; if all men were free from offense, in all ways, toward their fellowmen, then the government would need no laws, with their penalties, to hang threateningly over the heads of its citizens. If there were no thieves and no gamblers and no incontinent persons and no lovers of themselves; if there were none disobedient to parents and none unholy and profane; if there were none who fell short of the glory of God, we would need no jails and no penitentiaries, and no hang-man’s rope, and no electric chair.
