Tokens of Salvation

It is very important for us to know whether or not we are saved. Eternal issues are at stake, and besides, there can be no real joy in the Christian life, if one is always troubled about the question of assurance.

Believers may know that they are saved. In Heb_10:22 we read of "the full assurance of faith." Paul said, "I know Whom I have believed." The blind man said: "One thing I know, that whereas I was blind, now I see."

If salvation depended upon what we are and do, we could never know with certainty that salvation was ours, and even if we did know it, claiming a sure salvation would seem like boasting. But, since salvation is wholly of God, and since we are saved by Christ’s Blood, and assured by His Word, we may certainly know that we are saved. Moreover, to say we believe Him, and then to express a doubt of salvation, is to discount the faithfulness of God.

"Can it be right, for me to go,

On, in this evil, doubting way,

Say I believe, and yet not know

Whether my sins are washed away?

I will no longer doubt Thee, oh Lord,

I will forever rest in Thy Word."
