The Things God Puts First

To-day we are to speak of the things which God puts first. What God puts first, we must not put second.

"And He is the Head of the Church: Who is the beginning, the first born from the dead; that in all things He might have the pre-eminence" (Col_1:18).

1. Jesus Christ as the Head of the Church, stands first. All the members are brethren; He alone is Master. Let us give Him pre-eminence.

2. Jesus Christ is the beginning. He is before all things; by Him and for Him, were all things made; and in Him all things are held together. Once again, because of His eternity, and because all things came from Him, Christ is first.

3. Jesus Christ is the first-born from among the dead ones. He had power to lay His life down and He had power to take it again. He came forth from the grave with keys of death and hades in His hand. Christ is the first-fruits from the dead. What a glorious harvest will follow! Thus our Lord is the princely Leader of the things which were in the ages past; and He is the princely Leader of the things which await us in the resurrection. Let us make Him first, and let us keep Him first.
