The Steps That Led to Saul’s Conversion–The Pricking of the Spirit
"It is hard for thee to kick against the pricks" (Act_9:5).
From the day that Stephen died, there must have been prickings at the heart strings of Saul. He did not cease his damnable work. He, perhaps, became more determined to fight against the name of Christ. He hated Him, and felt that he must persecute the saints.
He had even gone so far as to secure letters of authority, and with them in hand, he started down the Damascus road, determined to bring bound to Jerusalem, both men and women, any and all of the Christians he could arrest.
The Risen Christ stopped him and said: It is hard for thee to kick against the pricks. Certainly then, Saul at that very moment must have been under a tremendous conviction of his sins.
That is what we need to-day–the old-time conviction of sin; the sense of sin that makes men cry out, "What shall we do?" There is little enough of this "pricking" by the Spirit of God, because there is so little real prayer life, like that of Saul’s kinsmen; and so little real testimony, like that of Stephen.
