0457. An Answering Conscience
An Answering Conscience
"The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God)" (1Pe_3:21).
Baptism should never be a matter for quibble and discussion. Baptism should be the "answering of a good conscience toward God."
Baptism says Christ went down into the grave for me and He came forth for me; He died, and I died with Him; He was buried and my old life was buried with Him; He came forth in resurrection, and I have come forth with Him.
Baptism gives answer to my conscience, and tells me I am free.
Let us forever cease making baptism a matter for denominational antagonisms and let it be what God makes it, an answer of a good conscience toward God in loving obedience to His Holy Will.
Down in the billowy waters of death
Baptized, I followed my Lord,
Buried, then raised, in union with Him
Obedient, I followed His Word.
And then sweetest peace came into my life,
A conscience both "good" and at rest;
In picture I’d shown just how I was saved
And how I, in Him, have been blessed.
