There are three great Calvary Psalms. Psalms 22 refers to Christ as the sin offering. Psalms 40 presents Him as the burnt offering. Psalms 69 sets Him forth as the trespass offering.
The words of the 22d Psalm may be thought of as words spoken from the Cross itself. They present Christ’s prayer, Christ’s plea, and Christ’s prospect. It may seem strange that the 22d Psalm not only speaks of the suffering of Christ, but of the resurrection and of His Kingdom. Our Lord upon the Cross, spoke of His Kingdom as well as of His agony. He said to one of the thieves, "To day thou shalt be with Me in Paradise." And He said this in answer to the query, "Remember me when Thou comest into Thy Kingdom."
Our Lord certainly saw His descent into Paradise as preliminary to His ascent and to the establishment of the very Kingdom of which the thief spoke.
The 22d Psalm gives the whole circumference of Christ’s thoughts as He passed round the cycle of His suffering.
