0498. The Names of the Wicked

The Names of the Wicked

There are six distinct names which mark those who know not God.

1. They are called in Psa_37:7,Psa_37:10,Psa_37:12, Psa_37:14,Psa_37:16,Psa_37:20-21,Psa_37:23,Psa_37:35,Psa_37:38; Psa_37:40 "the wicked" twelve times, and twelve is two times six.

2. They are called in

‘6f Psa_37:1, Workers of iniquity.

‘6f Psa_37:9, Evil-doers.

‘6f Psa_37:20, Enemies.

‘6f Psa_37:22, Cursed.

‘6f Psa_37:38, Transgressors.

As we look over the names noted above, we must realize that names are descriptive of character. None of these names are overdrawn, they represent truly, the actual condition of the people who know not God. God sees nothing in the wicked except darkness. Their whole head is sick, their whole heart faint; they are filled with wounds, bruises and putrefying sores; they are altogether corrupt. There is not one note of praise sounded in their behalf.

In this 37th Psalm, it must be remembered, the Psalmist is not discussing the wicked in their relationship, one to the other, nor in their human good. The Spirit is describing the wicked in their relationship to God and to His people. God acknowledged that Naaman was great with his master; that he was a man of valor, and integrity, but God also wrote, "But he was a leper."

The sinner, as God sees him, is totally depraved; there is no good thing in him; he is an evil-doer, a worker of iniquity and a transgressor, and an enemy, who is under the curse.

Consider the names of the wicked,

Which God hath so fully revealed;

They clearly show forth all the fruitage

The trees of their character yield.

They are "wicked," "transgressors" and "cursed,"

And "enemies," "workers of sin;"

With God they are nothing but evil,

And full of corruption within.
