Our Sevenfold Commission

Psa_37:3, Trust in the Lord.

Psa_37:4, Delight thyself also in the Lord.

Psa_37:5, Commit thy way unto the Lord.

Psa_37:7, Rest in the Lord.

Psa_37:7, Wait patiently for Him.

Psa_37:9, Wait upon the Lord.

These are the precious words which appear early in the chapter. They lie within the expression, "fret not."

1. "Trust in the Lord, and do good." In John 14, we read, "Let not your heart be troubled, ye believe in God, believe also in Me." That is the same thing that we have here. "Trust in the Lord," and "believe in God," are one. If we have faith in God, how can we be filled with fear? How can we fret? We should be,

"Trusting as the moments fly,

Trusting as the days go by;

Trusting Him whate’er befall,

Trusting Jesus that is all."

2. "Delight thyself also in the Lord." Here is more than trust. We should make the Lord our pleasure; we should joy in Him. There are many things that we may not have, but if we have the Lord we have all things.

Illustration: A woman of poverty sat at her table, with nothing but a bone to eat. She said, "Lord, I thank Thee, that I have this bone and Thee." Whatever the believer may have, or may not have, he has Him.

May our sweetest joy be our walk with Him, our talk with Him. God has called us "into the fellowship of His Son, Christ Jesus." Let us make Him our delight.

3. "Commit thy way unto the Lord." The word "commit" means, "Put it there and leave it there." Paul said, "I know Whom I have believed, and am persuaded that He is able to keep that which I have committed unto Him against that day." When money is placed in the bank, it should be committed to the bank. The depositor should not have to be running back, every little while, to see if his money is safe. And, why should we doubt God?

Illustration: In a Sunday School class a teacher presented a picture of the storm on Galilee with Christ asleep in the boat. The teacher said, "Children, would you have been afraid to have been in the boat, in such a storm?" One little girl replied, "I would not have been afraid, because Christ was there." She felt, somehow, that the boat could not sink as long as the Lord was in it. Then why need we fear? What if evildoers are around?–let us commit ourselves unto the Lord and trust also in Him, He will bring it to pass.

4. "Rest in the Lord." The word suggests, "be silent in the Lord." It means be still, and watch the Lord bring it to pass. It means cease from man, and cease from self, stop your strugglings. Rest in the Lord. Have unshaken confidence in Him. "In quietness and confidence" shall be your strength.

5. "Wait patiently for Him." The word "wait" suggests, "stand upon Him;" that is, "build upon Him." He is an impregnable rock, not the shifting sands. His Word is sure, His promises are "yea and amen in Christ Jesus."

It is not only "wait" or "stand" but, "wait" and "stand" patiently.

You have heard of the patience of Job, so be ye patient. The husbandman hath long patience in waiting for the early and latter rain, so let us patiently stay upon our God. He will bring it to pass.

6. "Wait upon the Lord." This time the word "wait," carries with it the thought of "hope." The Thessalonians turned from their idols to serve the Living God and to wait for His Son from Heaven. This is what we must do, we must wait for the time of our deliverance. The time when our Lord shall come. The time when we shall inherit the earth. This is the blessed fruition of hope. Certainly, there is no need to fret because of evildoers.

In spite of all that comes and goes,

Our Lord will soon o’ercome our foes;

So in our Lord we will delight,

And trust in Him, from morn to night;

We’ll wait with patience on the Lord,

And rest and hope upon His Word.
