516. Light
The Bible has a good deal to say about light. The first chapter of Genesis speaks of it—Gen_1:3, and so does the last chapter of Revelation—Rev_22:5. Light is the symbol of holiness and truth, hence “God is Light” (1Jn_1:5). Let us look at light as applied to God’s children in the Epistles.
1. Our Enlightenment. “God who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ” (2Co_4:6). The darkness of sin’s condemnation, control and, contamination is taken away by knowing Christ as our Saviour.
2. Our Environment. “Called you out of darkness into His marvellous light” (1Pe_2:9). The sphere into which we have been brought, and in which we are to move, is the “all things that pertain unto life and godliness” (2Pe_1:3), and of grace—Rom_5:2.
3. Our Enduement. “Now are ye light in the Lord” (Eph_5:8). Being in the light, we have all the privileges of the position, and among them is the power of the Holy Spirit.
4. Oar Employment. “Walk as children of light” (Eph_5:8). The believer’s life, wherever lived, has to be in correspondence to his position.
5. Our Enjoyment. “If we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship one with another” (1Jn_1:7). There is no peace, power, nor joy, so long as we are out of the orbit of the Lord’s presence; but remaining there they are all found.
6. Our Equipment. “The armour of light” (Rom_13:12). Christ is the Armour of Light. When He stands between us and any foe we are sure of victory.
7. Our Ennoblement. “Made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light” (Col_1:12). The Lord has ennobled us in making us His children, and sufficient for the heavenly inheritance.
