0545. Praise God for His Works
Praise God for His Works
"His work is honourable and glorious: and His righteousness endureth for ever" (Psa_111:3).
When we behold the mighty works of our God, we need not marvel that the Psalmist broke forth with praises to the Lord, "I will praise the Lord with my whole heart, in the assembly of the upright, and in the congregation."
When Christ told the disciples to cast in their nets and they encompassed a great multitude of fishes, Peter fell down and worshiped Him. Let us bow our faces prostrate before the Lord because of His mighty works.
1. "The works of the Lord are great" (Psa_111:2). Men marvel at the mighty achievements which their own hands have wrought. The world delights in expositions which glory in men. Yet these great expositions are, after all, nothing but the exhibitions of the greatness of God. Man has accomplished many marvelous achievements, but when simmered down, man has done nothing but borrow from God. He has taken hold of God’s power in the wind and in the wave. He has harnessed the electricity that fills the air. He has taken all of his supplies from the great bounties provided by God. Everything that man has, is second-hand; everything that man does, is copied. Only the works of the Lord are truly great.
When we behold the sun and the moon and the stars, the works of His fingers, how insignificant does man appear, and how insignificant his works.
2. "His work is honourable and glorious" (Psa_111:3). Our God never did a shoddy piece of work; He never wrought a work that was unclean. His works are full of glory. They are righteous altogether.
Sin and sorrow and suffering have been resultant from man’s polluted hands. Under satan’s guidance, the very earth is cursed. But the earth was not created thus. The thorns and the thistles were not originally known. Every vestige of imperfection is nature, every evil work is from man–the result of sin. God’s work is honorable and glorious. When God reigns supreme, there will be no more imperfection anywhere.
3. "He hath shewed His people the power of His works." We stood at Niagara amazed at the mighty power generated by the waters, as they dashed over the precipice. We went far down in one of the great planets which harnessed the smallest portion of the power of those waters, and we stood aghast at the mighty thunders of their rushings.
We looked from our steamer window and were over-awed at the power of God manifested in the wildness of a sea hurricane. The waters leaped in maddened fury and broke against our ship. Who can view such manifestations of the mighty power of the marvelous works of God, without falling prostrate at His feet? And yet, God has hidden to our sight the real grandeur of His mighty works. Oh that men would praise the Lord!
4. "He hath made His wonderful works to be remembered." Lord, let us not forget the graciousness and the compassion manifested in the work of Thy hands. All things that Thou hast created and made, are for us.
"I feel as weak as a violet, alone ‘neath the deep blue sky; As lone, but trustful also; for the whole year long, I see, All the wonders of faithful nature, still working for the likes o’ me."
And so it is, whether the sun rises or sets, whether the winds blow south or north, we have a God Who knows and cares. His works are monuments of His grace. His works are the supply of man’s need. Of His bounties have we all received. Let us remember His wonderful works, and praise the Lord.
