0546. Praise God for His Word
Praise God for His Word
"Praise ye the Lord. Blessed is the man that feareth the Lord, that delighteth greatly in His commandments" (Psa_112:1).
God hath not left man to know Him, alone by His works. He has revealed Himself unto us more fully by His commandments, and expressed Himself by His covenants.
The heavens may reveal the glory of God, but the Word reveals the character of God. The works of His hand cause us to fall at His feet and worship. The words of His lips cause us to fall at His feet and love Him. Of course, there is no contradiction between the message written in His works, and the message told by His lips. The latter, however, is the supplement of the former.
The wild Indians of the forest worshiped the "Great Chieftain." They saw God in His works and feared. The saint worships the covenant-keeping God. He beholds, in the Word of God, the deeper meaning of His works; he understands that God is love; he sees God in His Word and loves Him. Thus if men praise God for His works, shall they not praise Him a thousandfold more for His Word? God has commanded His covenant for ever, His commandments are sure and steadfast forever. The words, not the works of God, pre-eminently set forth His redemption. Let us praise the Lord.
If God had not given us His Word, we would never have known His covenant of redemption, because that covenant is a revelation and not merely a manifestation. The covenant was first set forth in Prophetic Scriptures and then made sure, and sealed in the Blood of Christ. Our God has exalted His Word above all His name.
Let us praise the Lord for His wonderful Word.
