Way
"They also do no iniquity: they walk in His ways" (Psa_119:3).
The word "way" occurs thirteen times in the 119th Psalm. It describes our going, our journeying, or, the treading of our feet. It will be interesting to follow some of the verses which illuminate the way in which we are to walk.
1. Psa_119:37 : "Turn away mine eyes from beholding vanity; and quicken Thou me in Thy way." The door by which we enter the pathway that leads from the city of destruction to the city of eternal rest is regeneration. We must first be quickened, born again, before we can walk in His way.
Bunyan describes Christian, as he passes through this gate and begins his march toward the City of God. Jesus Christ said, "I am the Door." There is no other door, "Ye must be born again."
2. Psa_119:1 : "Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the Law of the Lord." Having once entered the way, we need to walk worthy of our Lord. Everything that defiles must be cast aside. The way of the Lord, is a way of holiness, the undefiled alone can walk therein. Whenever believers sin, they wander from the main pathway. As we keep treading the roadway, we keep happy in the Lord. Therefore, "Blessed (or happy) are the undefiled in the way."
3. Psa_119:3 : "They also do no iniquity: they walk in His ways." This is much like the other verse, and is used only by way of emphasis. Whenever iniquity is found within us, we have broken fellowship with God.
Bunyan so graphically describes the sorrows that take hold upon those who wander from the way. God will not keep company with those who do iniquity. How strongly does the Epistle to the Ephesians set forth the worthy walk of the believer. We are to walk not as the Gentiles walk, but we are to walk as children of the light.
4. Psa_119:15 : "I will meditate in Thy precepts, and have respect unto Thy ways." Here we have a purpose expressed. It is positively stated, "I will have respect unto Thy ways." This is saying "yes," to God. The negative attitude is also set forth in the 119th Psalm. Verse 101 reads: "I have refrained my feet from every evil way." Psa_119:104 reads: "I hate every false way." Psa_119:29 reads: "Remove from me the way of lying."
It is necessary to cease to do evil. It is also necessary to learn to do well. We must not alone turn from the path which leads to destruction, but we must enter the path that leads to life eternal.
When David thought on his way, he turned his feet toward God’s way. The wicked must forsake their own way, and their own thoughts, and they must also follow God’s way, and God’s thoughts. Many are standing just now, at the parting of the ways.
"Which way shall I take? said the voice on the night;
I’m a pilgrim, and lonely, and dark is the night."
The time has come for every one to have respect unto God’s way, the way of light and of life, and to walk therein.
5. Psa_119:30 : "I have chosen the way of truth." The decision is now consummated, the choice is made; the new pathway is entered; the Heavenly walk is begun. We have every assurance that as we walk in God’s way, we will have every needed grace supplied. A Heavenly companion, the Holy Spirit, is commissioned to walk at our side. He will help us, and instruct us in the way in which we should go. He will warn us concerning every by-path. He will help us over every obstacle. He will lend us aid when we are wearied and worn by the wayside.
The way which leads to life, may be a lonely way. There are few who travel therein; and yet, the few offer the best fellowship to be found among men. Besides, we have the Holy One of God to walk with us.
Psa_119:14 : "I have rejoiced in the way of Thy testimonies."
Psa_119:27 : "Make me to understand the way of Thy precepts."
Psa_119:32 : "I will run in the way of Thy commandments."
Psa_119:33 : "Teach me, O Lord, the way of Thy statutes."
The four verses which we have grouped above, connect the "way," with four of the precious words we have already considered. The four words include: "Thy testimonies," "Thy precepts," "Thy commandments," and "Thy statutes." Thus, when we walk in the Heavenly way, we are walking in the way which magnifies everything that we have been considering in this study.
We will rejoice in the way of His testimonies; we will understand the way of His precepts; we will run in the way of His commandments: we will be taught the way of His statutes.
We are taught the way of God’s statutes, when we understand the way of His precepts. When we rejoice in the way of His testimonies, we will not hesitate to run in the way of His commandments. God save us from lagging behind. The commandments of the Lord requireth haste. There is no time to hesitate.
