575. New Birth

Christ repeated the necessity for the new birth twice to Nicodemus—Joh_3:3, Joh_3:7. The Lord Jesus does not argue the matter with Nicodemus, but keeps to this great necessity, if he would see and enter into the presence of God, namely, that he must “be born again.”

1. The necessity of the new birth is seen, because man is a sinner—Rom_8:7, Rom_8:8.

2. The Author of it is the Father—Joh_1:13.

3. The procuring cause of it is the Lord Jesus—1Jn_5:1.

4. The Effective Agent is the Holy Spirit—Joh_3:6.

5. The instrument by which the Spirit accomplishes His purpose is the Word of God—1Pe_1:23.

6. The evidence of it is brought out by John in his First Epistle—see 1Jn_2:29; 1Jn_3:9; 1Jn_4:7; 1Jn_5:1; 1Jn_5:18.
