0603. When the King Comes Back Peace Will Be Given Men
When the King Comes Back Peace Will Be Given Men
"And His name shall be called * * the Prince of Peace" (Isa_9:6).
During the past decade, we have seen strenuous efforts put forth for the establishment of peace.
When Mr. Wilson was elected for his first term of office, he went in upon a peace propaganda.
When Mr. Bryan accepted the portfolio as secretary of state, he said that he did not believe a war of any portention could be possible during his term of office. He felt the world had gone beyond the day of war butcheries; that the day; of wars had passed.
Within a day of the drawing off of diplomatic relationship between Germany and Austria on one hand, and the allied nations on the other, the whole world was full of proclaimed peace.
Peace was being placarded by the press; proclaimed by the politician; preached by the pulpit and applauded by the pew.
Mr. Carnegie, in the goodness of his heart, set aside a fabulous sum for the establishment of a peace court.
When war was declared, representatives from all the nations were gathered together at The Hague discussing peace. The world seemed to think that man had evolved from the mud and mire of the swine herd, into the shining star stuff of divinity; that peace was assured.
It is true that while the world was preaching peace, it was preparing for war. Nations were armed to the teeth.
Germany, England and France were pre-eminently prepared. They said that they were thus fully equipped only that peace might be assured, but in their heart of hearts they feared that the great war volcano might soon have an eruption.
For four years, blood ran like rivers; every invention for human butchery that human genius and skill could produce, was applied during the awful war.
When at last the armistice was signed a great sigh of relief went up.
Once more, the world is beginning to talk peace. The new fad is the League of Nations.
When we open the Word of God, we discover how vain are the thoughts of man.
We have heard, "Peace, peace" from human lips, but we have more authoritatively heard, "War, war." "For when they shall say, ‘Peace and safety,’ then sudden destruction cometh upon them, * * and they shall in no wise escape" (1Th_5:3).
The old earth is tired of war and we want peace, but there can be no peace, no assured peace, no lasting peace, until the coming of the Prince of Peace.
When Christ comes as King and reigns, He will speak peace to the nations. "The Lord of Hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge * * He maketh wars to cease unto the end of the earth; He breaketh the bow, and cutteth the spear in sunder" (Psa_46:7-9).
Why say ye not a word about the bringing back of the King?
Can there be peace,
And wars all cease,
And all the world find sweet release,
Till Jesus comes?
No, there’s no rest,
Nor wrongs redressed,
Nor can the earth be fully blessed,
Till Jesus comes!
