0641. The Jehovah Titles
The Jehovah Titles
The names of Christ portray the character of Christ; they reveal the sufficiency of Christ; they convey the heart of Christ.
Read Psa_9:10. "The people who know Thy name will put their trust in Thee." We sing a great deal about the name Jesus.
"The name of Jesus is so sweet,
I love its music to repeat."
Or
"Precious name, oh, how sweet,
Hope of earth and joy of Heaven."
The name Jesus is sweet. "Thou shalt call His name Jesus because He shall save His people from their sins." The Epistles, however, seldom speak of Christ, as Jesus. He is spoken of as Jesus Christ, or Christ Jesus, or, the Lord Jesus Christ, or simply the Lord Jesus. As we become more and more acquainted with Christ, we think of Him and worship Him not so much as "Jesus," the One Who died, but more especially as the risen Lord, and as Christ the Anointed of the Father. "Henceforth know we Him no more after the flesh."
The Old Testament presents the Jehovah titles. The word Jehovah really means, the One Who is, and Who was, and Who is to come. The other part of the Jehovah titles suggests distinct characteristics of Jesus Christ, Jehovah, the Great I Am.
Psalms 23, practically includes all the Jehovah titles. "The Lord is my Shepherd," is Jehovah-rohi. The Lord leading us by the still waters, is Jehovah-shalom, the Lord send peace. "He restoreth my soul" resembles Jehovah-ropheca, "I am the Lord that healeth thee."
"The paths of righteousness" suggests Jehovah-tsidkenu, the Lord our righteousness; "Thou art with me," is the same as Jehovah-Shammah, "The Lord is there;" "Thou preparest a table before me" brings to mind Jehovah-Jireh, "The Lord will provide;" "Thou anointest my head with oil," is much the same as Jehovah-medakishkem, "I am the Lord that sanctifieth you."
